Section 2 What Are Games?

I’m not going to even attempt to give a universal definition of a game. Plenty of people have tried, and it has become a kind of futile navel-gazing exercise. This is a practical book, not the work of an academic ludologist.

To be a successful game designer, you need to build successful games. Successful games don't stretch the boundaries of what it theoretically means to be a game, so I’m quite happy that we all know what a game is, and can get on with concentrating on making great examples.

This section tries to encourage you to think about games as games, not as mini-movies, board games or other forms of entertainment. When you get a clear understanding of what you're designing, and what constraints you have to face, you have a better chance of success.

Se acerca la Navidad, y esto se nota en todas partes, incluso en Microsoft. Los de Redmond saben que en estas fechas las familias pasan muchas horas juntas, así que se han lanzado con los juegos sociales. Primero fue Lips, después el Scene it! Y ahora el Youre in the Movies. Una interesante propuesta que nos permitirá ser los protagonistas de las películas. Como en todo rodaje profesional el juego también cuenta con una cámara, ya que el juego viene acompañado de la cámara oficial de Xbox 360. ¿Podrá alegrarnos la navidad este Youre in the Movies? ¿Es un buen juego social? ¡Vamos a reviewsarlo!

 Still Alive

i just got this game today also (besides the 360 version) and it’s pretty effin good so far honestly i just hate the tank board in bastogne it sucks that it’s only an on-rail level instead of actually being able to drive it…that’s my only gripe i’m in the british 6th airbourne sniper level but that’s about as far as i gone cuz ofcourse i gotta play my 360 cod as well!!

I love grand theft auto, iv’e been playing it since the first time the series came up. After completing every single edition (from gta1 - to vicie city stories) GTA IV will soon arrive to my PC (2 december)

This video shows the PC version and the build in game Video Editor.

THE SONG IS: Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene IV - Penguins
and you will hear it on THE JURNEY radio station

There is a review of GTA IV on PC in PC Gamer Magazine
the most important things from it is that:

- If you want to play in multiplayer mode, you will need to sign up in Games for Windows Live and RockstarGames Social Club,
- The game presents itself perfectly on a dual-core processor and GeForce 8800 graphics card, during the game there ware slight decreases in fps, but the reviewer ensured that it doesn’t happen often.

We lost this one. And I made many mistakes. Mistakes which I have learnt a lot from. “Good Game” goes to, Most Wanted.
But in the end, our clan still won the overall battle (see Grand Theft Auto Team Death Match #1 hewhodares.com 08.06.01 ftw!)

I’ve got my wifi router sitting right beside my ps3 and I still prefer to connect through ethernet cable because of packet loss and other wifi issues that occasionally arise.

But that could just be due to the make of my wifi router being lame. Im not sure.
Either way, ethernet is a sure thing.

    mumra2k // November 25th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

lol, yeah i agree with you mate! But in turf wars, often my ‘orders’ from the others are to ‘hold’ a base.

I also find it’s useful - while im waiting for the enemy - to use the map to tell my comrades where the enemy is (cos they’re attaking other bases) and if they’re doing anything ‘major’ like going to get an rpg, or if they’re in a car etc etc.

While i do that im also able to gauge whether someone is coming for me also.

    More fun facts:
1.) In this game combat gets repetitive EASILY!
2.) So what no online. Many games have no online mode and have been great.
3.) It dosent have a story mode, more so just a mission mode using Konoha as a hub to choose your missions. Same thing as this game preety much.

User Reviews

5 Stars Love the Wii Accessories for Gameplay!
We purchased the Wii Grand Slam Sports Pack despite some reviewers saying you had to remove the remote to access various functions or change games, etc.

We quickly discovered that you do not need to use the infra red control with the bat, tennis racket etc. All you have to do is use the “buttons” (left, right, up, down, A, B, etc.) on the remote after it is put into the bat, racket, wheel, golf club and you can change games, players, start new game, etc. Very very cool. The Sports pack has added a whole new dimension to our gameplay. We have so much more fun now batting the ball, playing “intense” tennis matches, golfing, racing… the accessories make you feel more like you are playing the real game. Although I must agree with one reviewer who mentioned they wish the golf club was a bit longer. Considering the length of the bat and tennis racket, I don’t know why they made the golf club so short, but still makes golf more fun than just using the remote (has not helped my “wicked-slice” however…. ).

You do have to remove the remote from the accessory handle when you want to return to main menu to end for the day, but all you really have to do is “tilt” the remote up at the end and that is it!

Again, We (the entire family and extended family are having the time of our lives with the Wii Grand Slam Sports Pack! I highly recommend this to anyone who has a Wii. You won’t be sorry. Just play around with the buttons on the remote to control the various game options (start, stop, players, number of players, levels, etc.) and you will have a great time!

2 Stars Not really needed.
I purchased 2 of these back when my wife and I bought our Wii. After playing with the sports pack for a while, we got kind of tired of it. Switching the controllers in and out was annoying, and, as other reviewers have mentioned, it’s impossible to set the game up with the remote in some of the equipment (like the tennis racket). We have found the game to be much more enjoyable WITHOUT the sports pack. I wouldn’t bother wasting your money on this one, personally…

5 Stars Very Satisfied
The products arrived ahead of schedule. They were exactly what was advertised. I am very satisfied.

5 Stars We dont see Isaiah anymore
My son loves his Wii and I am so glad I could find it so quickly. The delivery time exceeded our expectations. Another job well done.

1 Star Steering Wheel doesn’t work
My husband received this sports pack for his birthday. The first thing we tried to use was the steering wheel…we had another one made by Nintendo and we wanted to play Mario Kart together.

We were sad to see that the Steering Wheel does not work — there is no cutout for the sensor at the end of the Wii remote to communicate with the game! It completely blocks the signal from the remote! You would think they would have noticed this…The Nintendo steering wheel, however, works fantastic.

[PSX] The Italian Job by Stobczyk 1/7 (Full Gameplay)

7.3 = Good

## Review ##

The Italian Job is a mission-based driving game that emphasizes speed and humor over meticulous driving ability. It is most comparable to Infogrames’ Driver, but the open-ended courses and city locations give it an atmosphere similar to Sega’s Crazy Taxi. The setting is London, 1969. Charlie Croker has just completed a three-year stretch, courtesy of Her Majesty’s Prison. “Hang on a minute–I’ve got a great idea,” says Charlie, who immediately concocts a scheme to steal 4 million dollars’ worth of gold from the Italian mafia.

The Italian Job is based on a ’60s heist film.

If the underlying plot sounds like a wacky idea from a motion picture, that’s because it is. The game is patterned and named after The Italian Job, a 1960s heist film from Great Britain. The video game roughly follows the plot of the motion picture–you recruit and train for the caper in London, execute the heist in Turin, and make your escape through the Swiss Alps. In contrast with the majority of movie-to-game conversions, The Italian Job manages to maintain the original comedy of the script while simultaneously fleshing out the onscreen action with a number of fun missions. In all, there are 16 different capers to complete (they’re all rather short), one of which has you racing through downtown London in a bus full of explosives.

Unlike most mission-based driving games, The Italian Job doesn’t have an extensive pregame driving test or complicated control mechanics. Just jump right in and accelerate–the first few missions will bring you up to speed on the basics. The eight different vehicles you’ll drive in the single-player mode vary widely in terms of weight and toughness, which means that some stages require more precision than others do. Missions aren’t terribly lengthy–they average about five minutes–but some are impossible without intimate knowledge of the city. For example, you’re going to need at least four or five attempts to uncover all the traffic cameras in downtown Turin. The three-minute getaway that occurs after the heist is no cakewalk either, as it takes you through traffic jams, to rooftops, and through a river in a car that soaks up damage like a sponge. The police are also a factor, because they will give chase if they spot your car. You need to ditch them before they have a chance to jot down your license number.

Interwoven throughout the missions, you’ll find assorted cutscenes and cockney dialogue, all of which are funnier than they are violent. In one sequence, you’re picking up Charlie’s girlfriend after an afternoon of shopping, only to be accosted by the mafia while depositing her at the airport. Hilarity ensues in a madcap chase across the Italian highway system. Usually, attempts at subtle comedy in video games fall flat, but The Italian Job draws its dialogue from a film that originally starred Michael Caine, Noel Coward, and Benny Hill–Benny Hill! Even though the game features none of these actors, their original performances clearly inspired its humor–which is slight and farcical in that particular way that only British comedy can be.

It’s a fun ride for as long as it lasts.

Inasmuch as PSOne games are considered ugly nowadays, The Italian Job makes good use of the system’s graphical capabilities. Each of the three cities is fully detailed, complete with car traffic, pedestrians, storefronts, and waterways. Mission objectives force you to explore every nook and cranny of the city, including malls, rooftops, and construction ramps, which give the game a very lifelike feel. Smaller details, like the shards of glass that erupt during crashes, also add a touch of excitement. The backgrounds are heavily pixilated, and the frame rate does stutter at times, but considering how much appears onscreen at any given moment, The Italian Job is visually impressive.

The biggest complaint to be lodged against The Italian Job is that it is fleeting. On normal difficulty, it won’t take an average player more than a day to complete the entire single-player storyline. To offset this, the game includes 60 additional challenge trials, checkpoint trials, and obstacle course trials, as well as a competitive party-game mode for up to seven participants. These additions don’t really increase the replay value significantly, but the game is enjoyable while it lasts.

Although The Italian Job doesn’t possess nearly the longevity of games like Driver or Grand Theft Auto III, its madcap subject matter, good presentation, and friendly control scheme will appeal to many people.

Wii Music

Wii Music

When it comes to music and rhythm games, Wii Music stands in a class of its own. Unlike other music games, which penalize players if they don’t play perfectly, Wii Music is a musical playground where there are no mistakes. Here anyone can pick up and master the huge array of instruments available, through simple motions like strumming and drumming. Musicians in your band jam by simply playing their instruments to the beat of a song or by improvising to their heart’s content. Play faster. Play slower. Skip a beat, or throw in 10 more. No matter what you do, Wii Music automatically transforms your improv stylings into great music.

Gameplay: Getting Your Band Together
In Wii Music every band has six members: Two play the main melody, two cover the percussion beats, one covers the bass groove and one uses the song’s chords to support the melody. As a band, the six members often play their special parts at the same time, though each player can jam however and whenever he or she wants. Play all at once. Take turns in the spotlight. Pair up in creative ways throughout the song. You can bring the band to life by yourself, playing one part at a time-or with up to four players. See game mode below:

  • Solo Play: When you play by yourself, you can add one part at a time to arrange the whole song exactly how you want. The Tutes are on hand to back up your band in any parts you need filled.
  • Multiplayer: When in a band with friends, up to four people can be band members.
  • Wii Friends: Using WiiConnect24, you can send your jam videos to Wii Friends who own Wii Music. They can then watch your performance, modify it to their liking and send their jam videos back to you.

Tutes: Your Own Private Back-up Band
When not playing with friends, you can invite jam masters known as Tutes to play with you. They’ll join a session playing an instrument that each thinks is strong for a specific song. You can simply enjoy the musical camaraderie, or pick up instrument tips by watching them jam. If you choose to watch, the Tutes will show you lots of techniques for many of these instruments, then ask you to follow their examples. They’ll start with the simplest techniques, then as you master each one, show you even more nuanced ones.

Key Game Features:

  • Easy to Play Improv Jams - All members of your band jam by simply playing their instruments to the beat of a song or by improvising to their heart’s content. Play faster. Play slower. Skip a beat, or throw in 10 more. Wii Music challenges you to transform your improv stylings into great music. There are no mistakes and no game scores-just playing for the pure joy of playing.
  • Wii Controls Immerse You in the Music - You can play most of the 60-plus instruments in Wii Music using simple motions with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. Strum to play guitar, banjo and sitar. Drum to play jazz drums, congas and snare drums. Hammer away to play piano, vibraphone and marimba. Unlike most music games, Wii Music doesn’t make you use many complex buttons. You only need to imitate playing the instrument.
  • Virtually Endless Ways to Make Music - You choose the song and instruments and decide whether to blaze through a rock take on classical songs, put a jazzy spin on folk tunes or transform Nintendo classics like the Super Mario Bros. theme into Latin-flavored numbers. The song list is only a takeoff point-it’s how you improvise with the songs that matters.
  • Share Your Band Jams With Friends - They’ll see your Mii band members, your players’ improv styles and your instrument selections. They can watch your recordings, or play over parts of your song, then send their modified recording back to you. So you can send improv jams back and forth over WiiConnect24, changing them again and again.

60+ Instruments
You can play most of the 60-plus instruments in Wii Music using simple motions with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. Strum to play guitar, banjo and sitar. Drum to play jazz drums, congas and marching drums. Hammer away to play piano, vibraphone and marimba. Unlike most music games, Wii Music doesn’t make you use complex buttons. You only need to imitate playing the instrument. Wii Music offers virtually endless ways to make music.

Fun Beyond the Jam
Designed with classic Wii gameplay in mind, Wii Music includes many other modes and play options besides the main band jams, including several musical games and an enhanced video playback mode for recorded jams.

  • Videos Mode: Watch your jam videos in an enhanced playback mode that brings your jams to life with fun environmental effects and dramatic camera angles.
  • Mii Maestro: By waving the Wii Remote like a conductor’s baton in this mini-game, you’ll lead a Mii orchestra through orchestrated songs, such as The Legend of Zelda theme. Make them play quickly, slowly, strongly or gently-the orchestra is at your command.
  • Handbell Harmony: In this musical mini-game, you’ll play in a handbell ensemble by swinging your Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Everyone on the team has a job to do: play one of your notes only when the tune demands it.
  • Pitch Perfect: How good is your musical ear? In this whimsical musical quiz, you’ll have to solve challenges, like putting note-playing Miis in order from lowest to highest pitch.
  • Drum Mode: In the one mode that uses the Wii Balance Board accessory (sold with Wii Fit), you can feel what it’s like to play a real-life drum set. You’ll use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk as drumsticks, and place both feet on the Wii Balance Board-which work as virtual pedals for the bass drum and hi-hat cymbal.

4 Stars Wii Music versus Electric Keyboard
I remember reading one of the negative reviews here on Amazon for Wii Music where it was compared to a $25 electric keyboard from a “mega box” store. While I don’t agree with his opinion of Wii Music, I do think he had a point. Wii Music is closer to an electronic instrument/toy like an electronic keyboard than a rhythm video game like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. That is probably why there have been a number of people who have found it boring. Unless you like music and like playing around with music you are going to find both an electric keyboard and Wii Music boring after a couple of hours. The only “score” you get from either one of them is your opinion or the opinion of your “audience” (excluding the mini games in Wii Music which are scored). In my mind the question isn’t should you get Guitar Hero, Rock Band or Wii Music, but should you get an electronic instrument or Wii Music.

In that spirit, I felt it was worthwhile to compare Wii Music to an equivalently priced electric keyboard. I picked the Casio SA75 since I felt it had a decent amount of features for the price. There are of course many other electric keyboards or other electronic midi devices with lots of other features, but most of them cost more (around the $500+ range for the really good ones) than the $49.99 that Wii Music and the Casio SA75 are currently selling at. See below for my comparison.

Feature: Available Tones/Instruments

Wii Music - 65 different “instruments”. I thought the quality of sound was great for midi, but not everyone agrees with me :)
Casio SA75 - 100 different tones (some of which are combinations of tones like piano/violin where half the keyboard is piano and half is violin), 30 different accompaniment patterns (10 rhythm, 10 free style, 10 funny). However I saw that some reviewers thought the quality of sound wasn’t all that good and some of the instruments sounded the same.

Feature: Included Songs

Wii Music - Not positive but it looks like there is about 48

Casio SA75 - 10 demo songs

Feature: Total Number of Songs that can be played

Wii Music - The 48 included songs plus free style jamming with the toots (but you can’t control the tune, just the rhythm). It is possible that in the future you might be able to download new songs per Wii Connect but that’s not available as of this writing.

Casio SA75 - only limited by your talent, the music scores available to you, the 37 keys and only being able to play 4 notes at a time

Feature: Education/Lessons

Wii Music - For each of the 65 instruments there is background information. There are lessons on 11 musical styles for all 6 parts including rock, marching, reggae, pop and classic (so 66 lessons total). The pitch perfect game also helps teach a little about musical theory.

Casio SA75 - Can turn off the melody for the 10 demo songs and play it yourself instead with the notes shown in the LCD screen.

Feature: Saving

Wii Music - Can save all the parts for the last 5 songs played (30 parts total) and up to 100 music videos with 6 parts each (600 parts total for a grand total of 630).

Casio SA75 - Not sure but you might be able to save one recording. It also has an output jack so you could probably offload that one recording to your computer with the right software.

Feature: Create Videos

Wii Music - Once you are done with your jam session it gives you the option to save as a video right away.

Casio SA75 - N/A

In conclusion, Wii Music offers a number of very nice features that you can’t find on a equivalently priced electric keyboard which may make up for it’s lack of freedom in playing songs, but it will never replace real instruments or the more expensive electronic devices. However, it’s a fun and cheap way to introduce kids to music or for adults to play around with music without expensive instruments/equipment or years of lessons.

1 Star For ages 3-8 only.
I was SO excited to get this game. I was SO disappointed when I played it. This is the first review I have ever written. I feel compelled to warn others.

PROS:

-fun to watch you Mii playing music.

CONS:

-slow loading

-Terrible quality sound (Midi, my ringtones sound better than this)

-Poor sensitivity, does not replicate your movement well.

-Limited playing, I thought I’d get to be more creative with this.

-Price, I had a lot more fun and deeper experience with Endless Ocean (another “just play for fun not for points” game) at $[...] than this game.

Wii Sports = awesome

Wii Play = boring

Wii Music = novelty that wears off in a matter or minutes.

Since I played the game, taking out of the plastic wrap, I can’t get a full refund. (would love to try to get a refund straight from Nintendo) I would have to settle for 50% refund. So now I have to decide if it’s worth $[...] to get this game out of my house. Better yet, I should try to find a 7 year old to give it to, they might actually think its fun.

When kids get a new toy, they typically play with it for a day or 2, maybe a week. That is the perfect amount of time to enjoy Wii Music!!

Nice try Nintendo, better luck next time.

5 Stars If You Think it Sounds Cool - GET IT!
I’m Who This Game Was Made For. Ever since Nintendo started hyping up this game, I have been excited for it, and I’m so glad that I ignored the reviews and got it anyway.

This game is exactly what i hoped it would be: Addictive and a freaking blast. Any time that I tap a beat on my desk, with a pencil, or just all the little songs that come up during any given day, I think of how to put that in a Wii Music song

Arranging songs is a blast, and it’s HARD! I think this game may actually be too hard for some other reviewers that didn’t like it; it takes dedication to re-record each part until it sounds just like you want, arranging them into a song that you love. It’s complicated sometimes, depending on how your artistic vision is.

I’m so glad that I bought this game; i’ve had hours and hours of entertainment. It can take an hour or two to make a good six-piece arrangement, and then I record it and put the videos on YouTube where wii music lovers all comment on each other’s videos :) It’s great!

If you thought you’d like this game before seeing the reviews, you will probably love this game! If you have any interest, get it. It’s worth it.

5 Stars Tons of Fun
This is a very interesting, but fun, “game.” It isn’t a game like Guitar Hero or Rockband where you are essentially pushing buttons in time. To me, this is more a creative effort where you simulate playing musical instruments and can experiment with rhythm. Good thing they added a way to save and play back performances.

Initially, I wasn’t sure about buying it, but went for it once I found it had a drum mode. I’ve been thinking about getting a drum set–and this is enough to quell that thought. My wife is happy about that.

As far as playing, my four year old daughter enjoys it a lot, too. She may be more advanced musically than others (piano lessons for over a year) but she enjoys going through the lessons and playing jam sessions. I’m sure this will help develop her time and sense of rhythm.

Some of the motions are strange: in particular, the bass guitar and double bass. Note: I play EBG, ABG, EUB, and 2XB so I’m picky. But others are fun and reasonably accurate, mostly the percussion instruments.

Watching the sample videos is inspiring and shows its possibilities. I really think users, especially musicians, who’ve gotten bored with it haven’t explored all its true capabilities.

Summary: this is an excellent “game.” It uses the Wii controls very well and is potentially an educational title.

5 Stars Amazing game, but probably not what you thought it was
Wii Music is not Guitar Hero. That must be said right away. If you are looking for Guitar Hero or something like Guitar Hero, look elsewhere because you will not enjoy this game.

HOWEVER…..

…if you’ve ever played music, and/or understand the basic concepts behind jazz improv, or really just want to learn the basic concepts behind music, you will love everything about this game! The concepts of tempo, rhythm and even a little bit of chord structure are all in this game and are done very well. Maybe a little more “educational” than most people want, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

But the best part is the custom jam section. Like I said, this is basic jazz improv, and it’s basic jazz improv at its best! Pick a song, a part and an instrument, and then go to town! Just like soloing, the basic chord structure is presented in front of you and you can either play the part as written or play whatever rhythm you want…but you don’t have to worry about playing right notes! You just play the rhythm you want and the notes will come out correctly for you! It’s awesome!

So if you have ever been in some sort of high school or college band, or any band really, and understand that when a C is written you can either play a C, or a G, or alternate between the two in a basic eighth note triplet pattern, then you will fall in love with this game!

Wii Charge Station

Nyko’s Charge Station for Wii is a great wayto save money on batteries. This dock features twin rechargeable battery packs for the Wii Remote — just connect the Wii Remotes and let them sit until you’re ready to play. Charges two Wiimotes at once.

User Reviews

4 Stars Does the work, but design is not perfect
Have used this for months. It saves you from keeping changing battery on the Wii control which is very annoying and wasting. But there’re defects on the mechanical design as pointed out by others. When put the controller on the slot, sometimes you have to adjust it mutiple times to make the contacts on the back have a good touch. What makes it difficult is that you can hardly tell what’s the right pisition that makes the difference. A small guide or latch on mechanical would easily improve this one to a 5-star.

4 Stars A great addition, but a few tweaks away from perfection
I’m much happier with the charge station over endlessly swapping out batteries in the Wii controllers, but there are a few minor tweaks I would make to the next revision:

1. Add a groove in the center of the remote cradle for the hand strap to rest. I can still charge with the handstrap attached, but it’s a more tenuous way to place the charger in the dock. If I get bored one day a Dremel tool can fix that issue quickly :)

2. I don’t use skins for my Wii controllers, but apparently they don’t work well with the charge station. I wonder if creating the station to accommodate the skins and then having some snap-in sleeves for the naked controllers would work.

5 Stars Great product
it is really easy to figure out if your remoters are fullfilled by just look at the color change of the LED light at the bottom of the charge staion

4 Stars Wii Charge Station
This item keeps your Wii remotes always ready to use. The strap and rubber covers do make it a bit cumbersome to keep in the stand but it does work well.

5 Stars Great Investment for a Wii User
It’s a Great item for a Wii System, since the Remote needs an energy source because of its wireless nature. I bought this charger since the beginning I had the Wii, because I heard some opinions of friends who mentioned that for a pretty extensive gameplay, regular “AA” Bateries get dead in a matter of Hours, so you need to keep buying batteries over and over again.

I decided for this Nyko Charger over other models ( of different Brands ) that are USB Based, basically because this one is plugged directly to the AC power of the wall; unlike USB Wii chargers that need to be plugged into something else, like the Wii Itself or a USB port of a Computer. For these cases if you buy a USB charger and you plug it into the Wii, the problem I see with this USB based Technology is that the USB charger demands extra power from the Wii meanwhile you are charging your Remotes, and that extra power means to over heat the Wii in one way or another and that’s no good.

This doesn’t happen if you connect it to the wall AC Power. It charges each remote in a matter of 3 - 4 hours and remember: as Well as a Cell phone Battery, YOU DON’T HAVE TO CHARGE THE REMOTE EVERYTIME YOU PLAY JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TO HAVE THE REMOTE ALWAYS CHARGED. You Will Kill the rechargable Battery before time. YOU MUST CHARGE THE BATTERY WHEN THE REMOTE HOME BUTTON DISPLAYS IT IS IN RED or YOU GET THE MESSAGE ON YOUR TV or IT JUST TURNS OFF. Then you can proceed to make a FULL CHARGE of the Battery, Ok?.

It’s easy to use, Blue light means it is Charging and Green Light means the Remote is Fully Charged. You Save a lot of money by replacing “AA” Batteries, unless you have Rechargable “AA” Batteries.

Five stars is fair enough for Nyko and This Product.
